Playhouse in the Park
The age-old question of "who is faster?" comes to life in a whole new way on Sunday, April 19, 2026. The Event Center of Middletown will host a special double-feature afternoon featuring a live animal encounter with MetroParks of Butler County, followed by a professional musical production from the Tony Award-winning Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.
Training with the "Pit Crew"
Before the show starts, the fun begins at noon with the MetroParks "Racing Pit Crews." Families are invited to get an up-close look at the real-life inspirations for the famous fable.
MetroParks staff will bring a live turtle, a rabbit, and other interactive items to help kids learn what it takes to get these animals race-ready. Attendees can discover how these creatures move, what they eat to fuel their head-to-head competition, and decide for themselves: are they Team Tortoise or Team Hare?
About the Show
Following the educational session, the action moves into the ballroom for a fresh, contemporary adaptation of The Tortoise and The Hare.
Meet two competing friends in this fantastic adaptation of Aesop’s fable. Hare and Tortoise tell the sweet story of opposites and friendship. From sun-shining spring to snow-falling winter, this much- loved tale is brimming with ideas, characters and wonderful physicality – all leading up to their famous race and its nail-biting, medal-winning end.
This performance is a fantastic opportunity to introduce young children to the magic of live theater. The show begins at 1 p.m. and is recommended for children ages pre-kindergarten and older.
