The Community Building Institute (CBI), in partnership with the City of Middletown, Spectrum, and the Middletown Event Center, is launching the RISE Legacy Link Digital Education Program, a new initiative designed to help seniors bridge the digital divide and gain essential technology skills.

The introductory session will take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the Sonny Hill Community Center, located at 800 Lafayette Avenue, Middletown, Ohio. The session will be led by John Seibel, Executive Director of the GoCyber Collective, who will guide participants through the basics of digital literacy in a supportive, interactive environment.

This program is free for Middletown seniors, but registration is required. Participants can register by clicking here or by scanning the QR code provided on the event flyer. Space is limited to the first 50 participants.

The City of Middletown Communications Division is rolling out a long-requested e-newsletter! This newsletter will complement the current quarterly print newsletter, Middletown NOW, by providing news and updates as they happen, as opposed to waiting up to three months to include in the print newsletter. The new e-newsletter will also include an events calendar featuring the top events in Downtown Middletown, as well any city-sponsored events.

“The launch of Middletown’s e-newsletter represents another step forward in how we connect with our residents,” Clayton Castle, communications manager for the City of Middletown, said. “This platform allows us to share more up-to-date information about city projects, events, and services, while also strengthening transparency and accessibility. Our goal is to make it easier for residents to stay informed and engaged with what’s happening in their community.”

The first issue of the newsletter was released on social media due to the ongoing cybersecurity incident in the City of Middletown. More information will be available in the coming weeks regarding how to sign up for the e-newsletter, which will appear in your inbox every first or second day of the month!

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - The City of Middletown will hold a solemn ceremony on Saturday, September 13, at 8:46 a.m. to honor the lives lost and the heroism displayed during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The ceremony will take place at Woodside Cemetery, in front of the chapel, and is open to the public.

"This event is about honoring the lives lost and reminding our community that we will never forget the sacrifices made that day, especially by the first responders who ran toward danger to help others." said Callie Fisher, Middletown community projects coordinator.

The ceremony will include the Fire Department Honor Guard, a live performance of the National Anthem, and the ceremonial Ringing of the Four Fives, a tradition that honors fallen firefighters and first responders.

Following the ceremony, community members are invited to participate in a 5K walk or run through the grounds. Each participant will have the opportunity to ring the memorial bell upon completion of the course in remembrance and tribute.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – The Middletown Division of Fire has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS GOLD achievement award for its commitment to offering rapid and research-based care to people experiencing the most severe form of heart attacks and strokes, ultimately saving lives.

Emergency medical services staff can begin treatment when they arrive — up to an hour sooner than if someone goes to the hospital by car. EMS staff are also trained to provide resuscitation efforts to someone whose heart has stopped. People who arrive by ambulance may also receive faster treatment at the hospital.

Mission: Lifeline EMS® is the American Heart Association's national initiative to advance the system of care for patients with high-risk, time-sensitive disease states, such as severe heart attacks and strokes. The program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment — starting from when 911 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. Optimal care for heart attack and stroke patients takes coordination between the individual prehospital providers and healthcare systems.

“Arguably the most important link in the chains of survival for acute stroke and cardiovascular emergencies is emergency medical services and prehospital professionals,” said Kacey Kronenfeld, M.D., FAEMS, chair of the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline EMS Taskforce. “Early condition identification, stabilization and prehospital interventions, and initiation of actions within the regional systems of care provide patients with the best chance for receiving expedient definitive therapies leading to optimal outcomes and maximized quality of life. The American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline EMS awards are an important way to recognize the crucial roles and performances of EMS personnel in stroke and cardiac patients’ care.”

The Mission: Lifeline EMS achievement award focuses on agencies’ on-scene care, bringing to the forefront the collaboration and contributions to patient care for prehospital providers. 

“The Middletown Fire Department is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our dedication to providing optimal care for heart attack patients,” said EMS Lieutenant Ryan Pennekamp. “The Mission: Lifeline program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, so patients have the best possible chance of survival.”

The City of Middletown, Division of Fire is also recognized on the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline System of Care Target Heart Attack award, focused on the system of care for patients. This award highlights the collaboration and contributions of both prehospital and hospital providers. This time-critical award level is limited to those agencies that provide patient transport to STEMI-receiving and STEMI-referring centers and is the highest level achievable for both agencies. 

“The Middletown Fire Department is thankful to have such a great working relationship with our two hospitals. With this data collection and vast majority of Heart and Stroke Emergencies being transported to Premier Health’s Atrium Medical Center, it truly shows the outstanding collaboration that we as a department share with Atrium Medical Center.” said EMS Captain Andy Turner. “These statistics prove that our quality prehospital care in conjunction with the quick actions of Atrium Medical Center’s Emergency Room and Cardiac Department create the optimum outcome for our residents and visitors in the City of Middletown.”

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - The Warren County Port Authority, on behalf of the City of Middletown, received a $2.5 million Brownfield Remediation Program grant from the Ohio Department of Development that will go towards the cleanup and demolition of the Towne Mall. This award is part of a larger $60 million in state support to help clean up and and redevelop brownfield sites across Ohio.

“Over the years, we’ve helped transform hundreds of unsafe, blighted, and abandoned sites into new centers of opportunity across Ohio,” said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. “Through this program, we’re building stronger, safer neighborhoods and turning yesterday’s liabilities into tomorrow’s assets.”

The Towne Mall Project, with the help of this grant, will abate asbestos-containing materials and demolish multiple unsafe, deteriorating structures at the site. The abatement and demolition will prepare the 32-acre site for commercial and light industrial redevelopment, addressing known environmental hazards, and enabling future development opportunities.

Earlier this year, the City of Middletown issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for possible development of the Towne Mall. Midland Atlantic was awarded negotiations and an announcement on a final development deal is expected in late summer 2025.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Development announced that it is awarding a Roadwork Development Grant in the amount of $1,875,000 to the City of Middletown for roadwork to be completed at the Renaissance Pointe development site.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Ohio Department of Development for awarding this vital grant to the City of Middletown,” Middletown City Manager Ashley Combs said. “The funding will support critical roadwork at Renaissance Pointe, helping to improve infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and drive economic growth in this transformative area. This investment marks another important step forward in our ongoing efforts to create a more accessible, vibrant, and opportunity-rich community for residents, businesses, and visitors.”

The grant will help with the construction of an addition 1,329 linear feet of Atrium Boulevard, running south from Middle Drive, the continuing west to the Event Promenade. Additionally, 788 linear feet of Event Promenade will be constructed from Middle Drive, continuing south and intersecting with the extension of Atrium Boulevard. The construction of a retaining wall will also be necessary. The project that will be covered by the grant will create 140 new full-time jobs.

The City of Middletown broke ground last summer on the $200 million Renaissance Pointe project that will include multi-use complexes for Class A retail, restaurants, and residential units, located at the corner of S.R. 122 and Union Rd. The project is a significant investment aimed at reshaping, reimagining, and revitalizing the critical I-75 corridor in Middletown, with it being in a prime location between Cincinnati and Dayton. Renaissance Pointe is planned to be anchored by an arena/event center through a partnership with the Warren County Port Authority.

Two projects have already been approved for sites at Renaissance Pointe. One is Sheetz, a fueling station and convenience store, which was approved by City Council and the Middletown Planning Commission earlier in 2025. Additionally, Hallmark Communities has been approved to apply for permits to construct 288 multi-family residential units at Renaissance Pointe.

The City of Middletown is honoring its veterans by the hanging of Hometown Heroes banners throughout Downtown Middletown, featuring Middletown residents who served in the United States Military.

"This initiative is a heartfelt tribute to our veterans and active duty military personnel — a visible reminder of their sacrifice, courage, and commitment. These banners not only celebrate our heroes but also strengthen the sense of pride and unity in our community. We are grateful for their service and honored to recognize them in this meaningful way."

Dozens of veterans are honored along Central Ave. and adjacent streets, beginning at Charles St. going into Downtown. These banners will be hung from just before Memorial Day through Veterans Day in November.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - The City of Middletown is excited to bring back Movies in the Park for its 10th year in Middletown, bringing families together for a free movie night in several of our state-of-the-art city parks, showing some timeless classics and modern hits.

In addition to the return of movies and activities, the City is partnering with Middletown Connect to help with the planning and execution of the event! Here is the schedule for the 2025 Movies in the Park series:

• May 9th at Sunset Park, Disney's Cinderella

• August 8th at Douglass Park, Moana 2

All events will take place from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., with activities and snacks beginning at 7 p.m. and the movie beginning at approximately 9 p.m.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – Middletown City Manager Ashley Combs has selected Middletown Division of Fire Deputy Chief Brian Wright to serve as the next Middletown Fire Chief. Wright will succeed Chief Tom Snively, who will be retiring in the coming weeks.

“With 23 years of dedicated service to the Middletown Division of Fire, Deputy Chief Wright brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and leadership to this role,” City Manager Combs said. “I am confident he will serve the organization and the community with excellence.”

Wright began with the Middletown Division of Fire in 2002, rising through the ranks of squadperson, lieutenant, captain, and deputy chief. Through these roles, he has led as a company officer with a focus on fire suppression and emergency medical services (EMS), later transitioning into a role within EMS Operations. As a captain, Wright oversaw EMS operations budget. Additionally, Wright played a critical role in the Division of Fire receiving the prestigious Ohio State of Life Award for life-saving efforts.

“I am truly honored and deeply humbled by the opportunity to represent the City of Middletown, our community, and the dedicated men and women of this outstanding organization,” Wright said. “I’m excited to lead our department into the future with pride and purpose.”

Wright holds numerous certifications, including Fire Officer I, II, III, and IV, State of Ohio Paramedic, Fire Safety Inspector, and Fire & Emergency Services Instructor. His technical rescue expertise includes hazardous material, confined space, rope rescue, and ice water rescue operations. Additionally, Wright completed the Company Officer Leadership Symposium (COLS) through the Southwest Ohio Fire Chiefs. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Command of Multi-Alarm Incidents course in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Most notably, he recently completed the Ohio Fire Executive (OFE) program—a rigorous 2.5-year master’s-level leadership program administered by the Ohio Fire Chiefs’ Association.

Beyond his professional duties, Wright is deeply committed to the community. He has served on the Middletown Fire Union Local 336 Golf Committee, which has raised and donated over $30,000 to support the Middie Way Baseball Program, directly benefiting local youth.

Wright earned a degree in fire science from Eastern Gateway Community College, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He is also a graduate of nearby Talawanda High School.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – Middletown City Council voted unanimously at its regular meeting on Tuesday night to appoint Ashley N. Combs, the current acting city manager, to the permanent city manager position, effective immediately.

“I’m honored to be appointed to the position of city manager for the City of Middletown, a community I have grown to love over my nine years working here,” Combs said. “I want to thank City Council for trusting me with this position and I look forward to continuing the good work in making Middletown a better place to live, work, and play.”

Combs has been employed with the City of Middletown since 2015 when she began as a City Planner, rising through the ranks as a planning director, development services director, assistant city manager and most recently, acting city manager. As assistant city manager, she oversaw community and economic development, human resources, information systems, the Event Center of Middletown, and communications.

Combs has been acting city manager since Jan. 1, 2025.

EI Ceramics, in partnership with the City of Middletown, Pepper Construction, O'Rourke Wrecking, and Patriot Engineering & Environmental, broke ground on Jan. 24, 2025 on its $18 million renovation of the former Armco/AK Steel Research Facility on Curtis St.

EI Ceramics will be moving their operations in Sharonville and Fairfield to Middletown – all under one roof. The art deco-style building on Curtis St. in Middletown will be completely renovated to accommodate the manufacturing and operational needs of EI Ceramics.

The former Armco/AK Steel Research Building first opened in 1937. It was a critical piece in the operation and sustainability of the steel industry in Middletown – which took off with the founding of the American Rolling Mill Company (known as Armco) in 1899, who built the now-famous steel mill in Middletown. That mill is now operated by Cleveland-Cliffs.

The City of Middletown will be installing road signs at the entrances into the City, honoring Middletown’s native son J.D. Vance.

The signs, which will read “Hometown of J.D. Vance, 50th Vice President of the United States of America,” will be erected on January 21, 2025, the day after Vice President-elect Vance is sworn-in as a vice president, weather permitting. The sign locations are:

-    On eastbound Central Ave. at Carmody Blvd. (entering from Madison Township)

-    On southbound Ohio 4 at Germantown Road (near the airport)

-    On westbound Ohio 73 at the city limits (entering from Franklin)

-    On westbound Ohio 122 near Bob Evans (coming from I-75)

-    On northbound Ohio 4 at the south city limits near Lafayette Avenue

-    On northbound S. Main Street at the city limits (coming from Oxford-State Rd.)

-    Cincinnati-Dayton Road northbound at the south city limits (coming from Monroe)

The City is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the weeks following the inauguration at one of the sign locations. In addition to the signs, the City of Middletown recognized Vice President-elect Vance with a feature story in the Winter 2025 Middletown NOW Newsletter.

Vice President-elect Vance was born in Middletown and is a 2003 graduate of Middletown High School. He was elected as a United States Senator in 2022 and selected as President-elect Donald Trump’s running mate in summer 2024. On Nov. 5, 2024, then-Sen. Vance was elected as the 50th Vice President of the United States.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio – The City of Middletown Events announced its 2025 Events Calendar, featuring several events returning and expanding in the new year.

“2024 was the most successful year yet for Middletown City Events, with new and expanded events drawing people from all over in our great city,” Jeri Lewis, Middletown community projects coordinator, said. “2025 will build upon that success and bring about a new level of excitement, fun, and entertainment for families.”

The first city-sponsored event happens in February with Dessert Week returning for its second year. During the Week of Feb. 10 through Feb. 16, restaurants will be featuring a new dessert item for patrons to try, boosting business across Middletown during a typical slow period in the winter months. Other food weeks returning include Burger Week from July 7 through July 13 and Bowl Week from Nov. 17 through Nov. 23.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Bar Crawl is also coming back on March 15, kicking off a year full of parades through Downtown Middletown. Other parades include Memorial Day (with the annual ceremony at Woodside Cemetery following), 4th of July, and the Santa Parade in November (kicking off Very Merry Middletown).

Movies in the Parks will feature several blockbuster hits throughout the summer in Middletown’s beautiful parks. Cinderella kicks off the monthly series on May 9th in Sunset Park, followed by Inside Out 2 on June 13th in Sherman Park, Despicable Me 4 in Jacot Park on July 11th, and Moana 2 on August 8th in Douglass Park. The final Movies in the Park will correspond with a new two-day celebration in Downtown Middletown with Octoberfest on October 24th. On that night, The Nightmare Before Christmas will be shown in Downtown as part of the Octoberfest festivities.

The following day, on Oct. 25th, the Annual Family Fun Fall Festival returns for its fourth year, but in a new location! Fall Fest will be held in Downtown Middletown as part of the weekend’s fall festivities. Vendors, food competitions, food trucks, and of course, fun, all return for one of the premier events for the City.

Food Truck Fridays also return with different themes and/or entertainment each month. In 2025, the City of Middletown will welcome members of the Cincinnati Symphony and mascots from the Cincinnati Reds! Other themes include Game Night, Taste Around the Globe, and a BBQ Throwdown.

The Middletown Farmers Market is also back with expanded days! In addition to the Farmers Markets twice a month, an additional Farmers Market has been added each month for the First Friday celebration by Downtown Middletown, Inc. Farmers Markets will be at Governor's Square in Downtown Middletown in 2025.

This week, the City of Middletown sent out letters to approximately 4,400 water customers with information about their water service lines, which are the pipes connecting the water main to each building. These notifications must be sent by all public water systems, as required by Ohio EPA, to inform residents if their service line (pipe) material is lead, unknown, or galvanized, which may need replacement in the future.

The City of Middletown wants residents to know that while some service lines may contain lead, that does not mean lead is in your drinking water. The City of Middletown has an outstanding Water Treatment Facility that uses methods to reduce lead exposure. When water leaves the Middletown Water Treatment Facility, it does not contain lead.

• A service line is a water line that connects the home or building to the water main line.
• In most cases, the City owns a portion of the service line (up to the home-side of the sidewalk) and a resident owns a portion of the service line (from the property boundary to the home).
• The City of Middletown uses corrosion control treatment at the Water Treatment Plan to minimize the risk of metals from service line materials leaching into drinking water.
• The City also collects samples from tap water every three years to monitor for lead and copper in drinking water.

• The children of persons who are exposed to lead before or during pregnancy may be at increased risk of these harmful health effects. Adults have increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, and kidney or nervous system problems.

• Boiling water will not reduce lead.
• Residents are urged to use cold water for cooking, drinking, and preparing baby formula. Residents can reduce possible lead in water by running cold tap water until a temperature decrease is noticed.
• An ANSI certified lead filter can be effective at reducing lead levels in water.
