Street Maintenance
Snow & Ice Removal
During any snow or ice event, City Crews will make every effort to maintain clear streets for safe driving.
The city currently has a goal of plowing/treating all streets within 24 hours of the end of a storm event. However, if back to back storms occur or if the city is experiencing severe storm conditions, our main effort will focus on keeping city streets open for emergency vehicles. Bridges, overpasses, and the police circle are the first priority during any snow event. The next priority will be the major streets to the hospital and fire stations, then hilly areas, school zones (if in session) and residential streets.

Snow and ice melting salt is effective when temperatures are above 20°F and there are many vehicles on the street. When temperatures dip below 20°, calcium chloride is added to the mix. Grit may be added in extreme icing conditions for traction. Often, when a winter storm is expected, City crews will pre-treat the roadways with a brine solution which helps prevent slick roadways.
Snow plow operators try to clear streets without throwing snow back into cleared driveways and sidewalks. To help minimize the amount of snow that is plowed back into a driveway, shovel the snow to the right-hand side of your driveway as you face the street. When contracting with someone to clear a driveway and/or sidewalks, please remind them to keep on the property and not plow it back into the street.
