AK Steel Groundbreaking Showcases Collaborative Effort

AK Steel has a long and rich history with the City of Middletown. The groundbreaking ceremony for the company’s new Research and Innovation Center this June was the culmination of years of effort by city, state and regional organizations to bring this world-class center to Middletown. A highly collaborative effort, support for the $36 million undertaking came from a number of resources, including the State of Ohio, Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Jobs & Commerce, Warren County Port Authority, JobsOhio and REDI (Regional Economic Development Initiative) Cincinnati that worked closely with City of Middletown to create an innovative financing and incentive package.

The success of this project was a team effort from the start. It was a high priority for every, agency, organization and company involved—from the site selection firm to the landowner and general contractor; to the surveying, environmental and traffic study engineers and several legal and title firms—everyone played an important role. There were also several community partners and neighboring organizations that were integral to bringing this project to fruition.

Scheduled for completion by late 2016, the new 135,000-square-foot facility will sit on a 16-acre site along Interstate 75, anchoring the City’s thriving Renaissance District.

Middletown to Host Regional Training Event

The City of Middletown's Economic Development Department will host a regional training event featuring presentations by Ohio Development Services Agency (ODSA) representatives regarding Enterprise Zone, Community Reinvestment Area and Tax Increment Financing incentives. Community leaders have been invited to attend the August event, the purpose of which is to take a look at updated rules and educate participants on the administration and oversight of these important economic incentives.
