Police > Patrol Division

The patrol section is a critical part of the department employing 58 patrol officers, 6 sergeants, and 3 lieutenants. These men and women serve as the first line of defense in the fight against crime. These dedicated officers are the first responders to almost every call for service and are expected to handle calls ranging from an annoying barking dog to an armed robbery in progress. Their thoroughness when investigating calls, and constant observation for hazardous or illegal activity contributes greatly to the quality of life in the City of Middletown.

K-9 Officers
The Middletown Police Department has a long history in the area of K-9 handlers. Currently we have two handlers, Officers Vince Lovejoy and Robin Stone. Their dogs are trained to track suspects from the scene of a crime, and to find hidden contraband or drugs.

Community Oriented Policing
The police department has enjoyed success in the past with short-term community oriented policing (COP) programs. In 2002, the department created the first long-term COP division. This unit will problem solve in the area of quality of life issues, as well as work on projects with other city divisions, such as Special Operations, the Health Department, and the Neighborhood Improvement Unit.

School Resource Officers
During the school year, 7 officers are assigned to work in our local schools. They perform a variety of tasks that include crime prevention, the DARE program, and serving as the liaison between the schools, courts, and the police department. This is also an opportunity for positive interaction between the police and our young people. During the summer months, the school resource officers are assigned to patrol work projects and tasks with patrol units.

Special Response Team
This unit is designed and trained to handle situations that include hostage situations, high-risk search warrants, and any high-risk situation that has evolved. Each member of the SRT must pass strenuous tests in weapons training, physical agility, and have a stellar work record at the Middletown Police Department. There are currently three supervisors and thirteen patrol officers on the SRT.
