Ohio's government is patterned after the federal government which has established three equal branches of government: legislative, executive and judicial. Each was created to be a check on the other.
In Ohio there is a Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, Court of Common Pleas, and Municipal Court. Ohio law permits other courts to be established under certain conditions.
A Municipal Judge must be a practicing attorney for a minimum of six years and then he faces a vote of the citizens within the court's jurisdiction. Judges are elected for 6 year terms.
